Hong Kong Tailors

Author: Josh Riverside

Going to Hong Kong and thinking of getting your coats and shirts made there? Your choice makes sense, because Hong Kong not only has expert traditional tailors, but these experts also charge very reasonable prices for their services. Here are things to remember.

Plan ahead. This is your opportunity to get quality clothes made for your exact measurements at a reasonable price, so don't go there without a list. Use this chance to stock up on hand-tailored basics like classic suits, dress slacks, and tailored shirts.

Prepare to pay. Expect to pay regular Hong Kong tailors a flat rate of anywhere from $200 to $300, all-inclusive, for basic fabrics and cuts. If you want the services of a more exclusive Hong Kong tailor, expect to pay more. They typically charge anywhere from $500 to $800 for a tailored suit of high-quality fabric and lining. Their service alone (excluding fabric and peripherals) can cost anywhere from $100 to $200 for basic pants and women's dresses. Most tailors require a 50-percent down payment before they begin work. To get the best price and quality, shop around before committing to a tailor. Inspect his finished garments, and go with the one whose stitching and construction skills you like best.

Give it three days to a week. Hong Kong tailors are usually very busy (because there's only a few of them left now), so do not expect to get your coat overnight. Give custom shirts about three days, and major pieces like tuxedos about a week (including fitting and refitting).

Know where to go. Along Burlington Arcade on Nathan Road, you will find a building where Hong Kong's traditional tailors conduct their business. The tailors in this district are affordable but just as skilled as the more exclusive ones whom you can find in Hong Kong's finest hotels.
